I'm a firm believer in visiting places in winter, when the weather is cool, many touristy things are closed and therefore only those who truely want to experience a place dare go. This scene is in the Fells of the Lakes District in the midst of winter. You could almost hear the fairies scuttling away as we approached each moss laden fence or mushroom encircled tree. The colours were extraodinary. Having never seen these colours in my life it was hard to believe they were real. In the painting I tried to capture the serenity and the "silent noises" of the forest.
